A Japanese phone number, and how to get one

Reservation systems, rental car desks and delivery lockers in Japan want a domestic number and reject a foreign one. None of the eSIMs we sell can give you one.

When a Japanese number is genuinely required and when it is not

Japan runs on domestic phone numbers in a way that surprises visitors. A great deal of the country's booking infrastructure predates the assumption that a customer might be foreign.

Where it bites:

Restaurant reservations. Popular restaurants take bookings by phone or through Japanese-language systems whose forms reject a country code. Some of the best places in Tokyo and Kyoto cannot be booked any other way, and the hotel concierge calling on your behalf is the standard workaround.

Rental cars. The desk wants a contactable number for the duration of the rental, and some agencies will not accept a foreign one on the form. If you are driving in Hokkaido or Shikoku, ask before you fly rather than at the counter.

Delivery lockers and konbini pickup. Ordering something to a convenience store for collection, which is a genuinely useful thing to do on a long trip, wants a domestic number for the notification.

Some hotel and ryokan check-ins. Usually not a hard requirement, occasionally one, more often at small family-run places outside the cities.

Where it does not bite: almost everything else. Hotels booked internationally, trains, museums, shops, restaurants that take walk-ins, and every service that has an English website. Most visitors go two weeks without needing a number once.

The three ways to get a number with the catches

Read the Drimsim row twice. It is the only option on this page we get paid for, and it is the one least likely to solve your problem. If what you need is a Japanese number for a Japanese booking form, a foreign number with SMS does not do it. If what you need is to be reachable on a number that follows you across several countries, it does. Those are different problems and the marketing tends to blur them.

What to do instead, which is what most people do four workarounds

Let the hotel call. Every decent Japanese hotel will make a restaurant reservation for you, and at the level of restaurant that requires a phone booking, this is the expected route rather than a favour. Ask at check-in, not at 18:00 on the day.
Use the booking platforms that accept foreign numbers. TableCheck, Omakase and the restaurant pages on the big hotel sites take international bookings. Coverage is partial and growing, and it removes the problem entirely where it exists.
Give your home number in international format where the form allows it. Many do. The ones that do not are the ones you need a workaround for, and they are fewer than the forums suggest.
Book the rental car through an international agency if you are driving. Their systems are built for foreign customers and the phone number field behaves accordingly.

LINE is what Japan actually uses and it works fine on data

Japan's messaging app is LINE, not WhatsApp, and it is close to universal domestically. Hotels, tour operators, guides and increasingly small restaurants will happily communicate through it, and it works over any data connection with no phone number requirement beyond the one you register with at home.

Set it up before you travel, using your home number for verification while you still have signal on it. Registering LINE for the first time from Japan on a data-only eSIM is the kind of thing that goes wrong on day one of a trip.

For calls, LINE, WhatsApp and FaceTime all work over the data plans on this site, and your home number keeps receiving calls and texts as long as you leave that line enabled with data roaming off. Being reachable is not the problem. Filling in a Japanese form is.

Can I get a Japan eSIM with a phone number?

Not from any travel eSIM on this site. All of them are data-only. A Japanese number means either a visitor-focused voice SIM such as Mobal, ordered before you travel, or a Japanese carrier line, which requires proof of residence a tourist visa does not give you. Do I need a Japanese phone number as a tourist?

Usually not. Most visitors go two weeks without needing one. The standard workaround is asking your hotel to call, which at that level of restaurant is the expected route anyway.

Why do Japanese websites reject my phone number?

Because a lot of Japanese booking infrastructure was built on the assumption that customers have a domestic number, and the form validates for a Japanese format rather than an international one. It is not aimed at you specifically. Platforms like TableCheck and Omakase accept foreign numbers and are the practical route.

Does my home number still work in Japan?

Yes, if you leave that line enabled with data roaming switched off. You keep receiving calls and texts on it, including bank verification codes, while the eSIM carries your data. This is the main advantage of an eSIM over a physical Japanese SIM, which takes the tray and puts your home number in a drawer.

Is Mobal worth it for a Japan trip?

If you specifically need a Japanese number, it is the most practical route for a visitor: a real domestic line, ordered before you travel and delivered to your hotel.
